Business Case

Data access is crucial in the transition to a data-driven enterprise, and is key to executing a strategy that outperforms competitors.

Peaxy® Aureum® empowers universal access to data, allowing your company to gain control over unstructured and structured data assets and making it easy to find, mine, manage and reuse information across silos, data types, applications and infrastructures (on and off premises).

It’s no small task to gain control over exponentially growing data assets spread across the entire enterprise. The growth and increased complexity of unstructured data is accelerating and exerting extreme pressure on IT infrastructures beyond what they were intended to handle. This means that “crown jewel” data sets “go dark,” which hampers the success of new business models like industrial predictive maintenance and genomics-based drug discovery.

Aureum’s data access capabilities speed up time-to-value. We enable a broad set of stakeholders to readily find and analyze your company’s most valuable data.

Aureum enables enterprises to realize productivity gains by empowering teams with self-serve access, search and management across data types and silos. This saves time when you locate data and increases sharing across teams. It can recover weeks or months of time lost on task duplication when the right information can’t be found for maintenance or new product development.

Inside Big Data

Think about the maintenance needs of an airliner. Original schematics may yield information that determines the lifespan of a certain part under normal conditions, while simulation data offers information on outside factors that may have altered this. Combined with real-time telemetry, engineering teams can make the case to the airline to pull an engine from operation before a problem surfaces, greatly extending the life of that equipment (and potentially saving lives).

Oilfield Technology

Most energy, oil exploration, drilling and production companies acknowledge that data management presents one of today’s greatest challenges. One might perceive the inability to get a handle on mission-critical datasets as an IT problem, but it’s really an enterprise-wide problem. Failure to access this invaluable information prevents organizations from accomplishing their highest-level strategic objectives. If engineering teams could easily find precious, decades-old datasets and compare them to current data, exploration and production outfits would realize tremendous operational and revenue gains.

Aureum delivers reliable access to data across silos, so teams can more accurately predict maintenance cycles and enable more efficient and cost-effective services. Aureum data aggregation and search can speed service delivery, accelerate development of new products from existing products and uncover opportunities for new revenue streams from data insights.

Aircraft Technology

Today the industry is predicated on long-term service agreements where companies are promising on-wing percentages. To do that effectively, given that so much margin is tied in with meeting service accountability agreements, engineers, field service organizations, simulation and design engineers need access to these entire data sets if they're going to perform predictive maintenance better than competitors.

Aircraft Maintenance Update

When telemetry data analysis points to potential design issues, a fast track back to design information is needed. The idea is to come as close as possible to recreating the original design datasets by aggregating all of the associated structured and unstructured information. But this is a challenging endeavor, because engineers spend a significant amount of their time just chasing down this data.

Today enterprises are aggregating, mining and analyzing data to gain insights using the Hadoop open-source framework for distributed processing of large datasets. Ingesting and storing data in Aureum provisions the dataset with robust data services, including management and availability, search and security. Interoperability via POSIX and HDFS APIs allows users to selectively move structured and unstructured information into Hadoop and Spark from the Aureum stores. It also empowers search to “trace back” to original data when a review of the source data is required.

Next generation genomics and proteomics require massive amounts of parallel processing on samples to gain insights into how cells are regulated and how variations in an individual’s genomic DNA can increase the incidence of disease. The size of the data poses a fundamental problem for both management and analysis.

Aureum is hardware–agnostic and runs on industry standard commodity hardware for a lower cost of ownership. It is built to run over heterogeneous hardware, so enterprises can mix and match vendors, form factors, hardware generations and types of storage devices. Across this ecosystem, Aureum offers a single namespace that aggregates all devices. Automatic tiering, built-in redundancy and self–healing reduce manual interventions, further lowering costs. This keeps the solution cost effective lowering the total cost of ownership more than 50 percent.

“The cost to expand our storage system—currently a parallel processing array of 100 multi-core computers with data stored in a dedicated storage cluster—is a major problem,” said the CIO of a major manufacturer of petroleum exploration and distribution systems. “While we use off-the-shelf PC servers for compute nodes, the storage servers are proprietary, dedicated units and are much more costly to purchase and maintain. Worse, we know that under the brand-name covers they are actually PC servers, but the vendor has locked them down so we can't use them for anything else.”
